What Causes Language Development Delays in Children?

The first two years of life are a critical period that shapes the foundation for future language and communication development. Language skills help your child express and understand feelings, think and learn, solve problems, and develop/maintain relationships with others.

One out of five children will experience language development at a pace that’s slower than their peers. Some children with speech or language delays have an underlying developmental or physical problem causing the delay. Oral-motor problems, Autism, hearing difficulties, and other intellectual disabilities can affect language development in children. However, there isn’t always a known cause as some children just seem to progress at different speeds.

Parents are important partners in the process of helping their child reach language milestone achievements. It is important to determine the underlying cause of your child’s language difficulties to help you and your child reach your full potential.
